One computer expert working alone has built a historic newspaper site that’s orders of magnitude bigger and more popular than the one – created for the Library of Congress a federal bureaucracy with millions of dollars to spend.
Armed only with a few PCs and a cheap microfilm scanner, [ The Wicks and Wilson – WWL 8850 model 35 mm roll film Scanner ] Tom Tryniski has played David to the Library of Congress’ Goliath.
Tryniski’s site, Fultonhistory.com [ Now no longer available Online ] but now available online @ Amateur Beats Gov’t at Digitizing Newspapers: Tom Tryniski’s Weird, Wonderful Website which he created in his living room in upstate New York, has grown into one of the largest historic newspaper databases in the world, with 22 million newspaper pages.
By contrast, the Library of Congress’ historic newspaper site, Chronicling America, has 5 million newspaper pages on its site while costing taxpayers about $3 per page.
In January, visitors to Fultonhistory.com [ Now no longer available Online ] accessed just over 6 million pages while Chronicling America pulled fewer than 3 million views.
Fourteen years ago, Tryniski, a retired engineer, launched his website after a friend loaned him a collection of old postcards of Fulton, New York, the town where he’s lived all his life. He decided to scan and share them online with his neighbours.
Fulton fell on hard times in the mid-1970s, and Tryniski is nostalgic for the thriving factory town in which he grew up. He relishes in particular the small details of life in old Fulton—wedding announcements, obituaries, school events, society gossip—the sort of information that’s the bread and butter of local newspapers.
So after the postcards, he digitized the entire run of the Oswego Valley News, which is the paper of record for Fulton and its surrounding county.
It took about a year to finish scanning by hand the entire run of the paper, which began publishing in 1946.
That meant he didn’t need access to the original newspaper copies, and he could work quickly because microfilm scanners are largely automated.
He installed a keyword recognition program, set up a network of PCs to do the heavy processing, and began uploading his scans to a server that’s located in a gazebo on his front deck.
He never bothered to change the original name of his website.
Tryniski pays all expenses for the site himself. The only significant costs are bandwidth, for which he pays $630 per month, and hard drives, which cost him about $200 per month.
He gets his microfilm at no cost from small libraries and historical societies.
In exchange, he gives them a copy of all the scanned images analysed for keyword recognition.
Most of the papers Tryniski has digitized are from
New York, but he’s rapidly expanding his coverage to other states as well.
He is adding updated content at a rate of about a quarter-million pages per month with no plans to slow down.
The biggest digital newspaper site on the Internet is the for-profit Newspaperarchive.com [ Now no longer available Online ] with 130 million pages. Newspapers.com[ Now no longer available Online ] a subsidiary of genealogy-titan Ancestry.com, has 34 million newspaper pages.
Both companies have approached Tryniski with partnership deals, but he turned them down in order to keep his site free.
“I think it’s just fascinating that technology has made it possible for a guy in a house with a server to create a pretty cool experience,” says Brian Hansen, the general manager of Ancestry’s Newspapers.com.
To date, the NEH has spent just over $22 million on the site.
A major reason for the sky-high price tag is that the NEH breaks up the money into tiny grants to individual libraries and historical societies, instead of simply paying the Library of Congress directly to complete the job.
So far, the NEH has awarded 72 grants worth about $300,000 each. Each award recipient is responsible for digitizing about 100,000 newspaper pages.
The majority of grant recipients hire a company called iArchives, Inc., a subsidiary of Ancestry.com, to do the actual scanning and analysis.
Hansen, who is also the general manager of iArchives, Inc., says if the Library of Congress hired his company to do the job in bulk, he could offer a better rate.
Asked for the rationale behind this byzantine system, a spokesperson for the NEH denied that breaking up the funding into small grants drives up costs, adding that the goal is partially to teach small libraries how to digitize newspapers in accordance with the Library of Congress’ “high technical” standards.
That way they’ll be able to take that knowledge and apply it to other projects.
But Hansen says the Library of Congress’ detailed specifications for analysing each newspaper page are of questionable value to users and a major reason his firm has to charge so much.
“Why not use the money for a lighter index to get more pages online?
It would be interesting to sit down with the Library of Congress and the NEH and have a conversation about what’s the best thing we can do for consumers,” says Hansen.
Even so, less than one-third of the funding goes to the actual scanning and indexing by firms like iArchives.
The NEH says the remaining money—more than $2 per newspaper page— goes for “identification and selection of the files to be digitized, metadata creation, cataloguing, reviewing files for quality control, and scholarship on the scope, content and significance on each digitized newspaper title, and in some cases specialized language expertise.”
In its heyday as the paper of record for America’s third largest city, the Daily Eagle was among the most widely read and influential newspapers in the nation.
Poet Walt Whitman wrote more than eight hundred items for the paper and served as its editor from 1846 to 1848.
During the Civil War, the Daily Eagle had the largest circulation of any evening paper in the United States.
The Brooklyn Public Library spent two years and about $400,000 dollars digitizing just the first 62 years of the Daily Eagle‘s run, which comes to about 150,000 pages.
( A little more than half the funding was provided by a federal grant. )
That was back in 2003.
For the last decade, the library has been trying to raise money to finish the job.
In the meantime, Tom Tryniski digitized the entire 115-year run of the newspaper, which amounts to almost 750,000 pages.
In its January 2013 strategic plan, the Brooklyn Public Library promises that it will finish digitizing the Daily Eagle ( along with 63 Brooklyn community newspapers ) by 2015.
In an interview, Library Director Richard Reyes-Gavilan said the institution hasn’t raised any money yet towards that goal, but that it will be a major priority once other “monstrous projects” are out of the way.
Librarian Joy Holland, who oversees the Brooklyn Public Library’s Daily Eagle site, says she’s “immensely grateful” for what Tryniski has done, and directs researchers to the site all the time.
She also thinks the library’s site, while far more limited is scope, is “more suitable for use in educational environments.”

The site has fewer keyword recognition errors than Fultonhistory.com [ Now no longer available Online ] , and for casual users, it’s easier to search.
Fultonhistory.com [ Now no longer available Online ] also has a bizarre interface that includes swimming fish and the occasional live video stream of squirrels eating corn on Tryniski’s front deck.
Perhaps the strangest detail is a moving graphic in the left-hand corner of the screen that shows Tryniski’s head grafted on top of the body of a spider.
Tryniski, who has never altered the site’s original graphic design, says he’s emphasizing content over style.
“I could spend all my time on the interface, or I could spend my time on the digitization and data processing,” says Tryniski.
“Once you hit the search button the interface disappears, and you get to see the newspapers.”
Tryniski’s had discussions with the New York State Library to donate his archive eventually, but talks have stalled.
He gets emails all the time from users sharing discoveries they’ve made on his site and thanking him for making it all possible.
“I just get a lot of satisfaction helping people find information,” says Tryniski.
“It’s just really nice looking back in time and reading about what was going on.”
Video written, produced, shot, and edited by Jim Epstein, who also narrates.

About 2 million pages that the NEH has awarded grants for haven’t yet made it online, so the $3 per page estimate was arrived at by dividing $22 million ( total grant funding as of 2012 ) by 7,271,000 pages ( total paid for by grants as of 2012 ).
2011-APRIL:
Digital Scanning & Microfilm Equipment – DS & ME is pleased to be able to announce the release of the Wicks and Wilson Limited – WWL NEW UPGRADED – FASTER with HIGHER SPEED & MORE POWERFUL – with IMPROVED CAPABILITIES C400 with AUTOMATED 35 mm APERTURE CARD FEED & Drive X Series for single 35 mm aperture card scanning 35 mm Aperture Card Scanners for Engineering Drawings, Maps & Plans.
The Wicks and Wilson Limited – WWL C400 with AUTOMATED 35 mm APERTURE CARD FEED & THE DRIVE x Series units for Engineering Drawings, Maps & Plans are designed to replace the outgoing C250 models. At the same time, an updated version of the C Drive X for single 35 mm aperture card operation will be released and the C-Drive internal scanner will cease production.
The C400 Series is a range of compact scanners for the digitisation of 35 mm microfilm aperture cards. Once scanned, the data can be accessed instantly for viewing, printing, email, distribution, or storage.
The C400 features an automatic feed system that can scan batches of 150 – 35 mm Aperture Cards for Engineering Drawings, Maps & Plans unattended.
Advanced image enhancement and editing tools are included as standard in the Windows 7 compatible software. For full details on the Wicks and Wilson Limited – WWLC400 Series of 35 mm Aperture Card Scanners for Engineering Drawings, Maps & Plans you may care to view or download a copy of the C400 Series of 35 mm Aperture Card Scanners Brochure @ Wicks and Wilson Limited – C400 Series of 35 mm Aperture Card Scanners
New features and updates summary:
The NEW UPGRADED Wicks and Wilson Limited – WWL C400 Series offers the following updates and new features compared to the outgoing C250 Series
Fully compatible with Windows 7, supporting both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Microsoft’s latest operating systems has been provided.
Increased throughput; now 300 – 35 mm Aperture Cards per hour at 400 DPI, up from 250 – 35 mm Aperture Cards per hour for the C250. This has been achieved by reconfiguration and optimisation of the scanning process and is most noticeable when scanning larger drawings at higher resolutions.
Dual save functionality, allowing greyscale and bi-tonal image files to be created from a single scan.
The bi-tonal image, with its smaller file size, is ideal for printing and email distribution whilst the greyscale file provides the detail sometimes required for poorer quality 35 mm aperture cards or can be saved as an archival copy, available for reference when necessary.
Auto-white balance ( AWB ) imaging tool analyses the scanned image and then automatically selects the optimal brightness and contrast settings to generate a high-quality greyscale image with a light background and strong, dark data.
The imaging algorithms used to process the scan data have been improved so that images are processed faster. This is most noticeable when scanning larger drawings at higher resolutions.
Simplified installation and set-up with digitally signed Windows drivers.
USB dongle protection.
All this and no price increase over the Wicks and Wilson Limited – WWL C250!

A2 Book Scanner SCAN MASTER 2
The A2 book scanner that handles the big boys!
The SCAN MASTER 2 is a special A2 book scanner. It was basically designed for applications that require a very high optical resolution and where the books are very thick. With its 35 cm motorized book cradle the SCAN MASTER 2 is able to handle books that other A2 book scanners are unable to cope with. Operating the SMA SCAN MASTER 2 A2 book scanner is easy and convenient. Simply place the book and hit the scan button. The rest of the process is fully automatic. All the operator has to do is to flip the page and release the scan. All SMA scanners are equipped with a special LED light illuminator that does not produce any ultraviolet or infrared radiation. Harmless and uniform illumination is guaranteed. The illuminator of all SMA scanners is located inside the scan head and is simply moved across the original. As a result all SMA book scanners can be operated independent from ambient light and do not irritate the operator‘s eyes.
The SCAN MASTER A2 book scanner comes with V3D Technology – a new scanning technology which allows users to scan many different types of originals. It offers the capability of digitizing structured surfaces such as wood, rubber, plastic, fabrics, carpet and many more types of material. Finally, light reflecting items such as coins, seals, metal prints and silver or Gold coated originals can be captured at the highest quality. The V3D technology presents new opportunities as it can be applied to materials outside the normal archive and library world. V3D stands for VISUAL 3D. It is a newly designed scanning technology that produces results that look like 3D. The process is based on different lighting scenarios where the same area is being captured with several different lighting scenarios on the fly. The software then combines the separate images into one image. As a result V3D images offer perfect reproductions of nearly any structured surface. In addition it increases the depth of field significantly. This approch is unique and raises the outstanding image quality of SMA scanners to another level. The V3D function can be disabled and regular 2D scanning can be performed.

Robotic Book Scanner ROBO SCAN V2
The robotic book scanner ROBO SCAN V2 is the most versatile robotic book scanner in the market. It offers the advantages of a robot combined with the convenience of a manual book scanner. The ROBO SCAN V2 was designed for realistic digitization projects where the robotic part can do most of the job, but the same scanner is also able to handle problematic books in manual mode.
The robotic book scanner ROBO SCAN V2 is a unique product which offers robotic and manual scanning in the same unit. Moreover, originals can be scanned in different orientations. For the best results, the use of a glass plate is recommended. The whole procedure of turning the pages, moving the V-shaped glass plate up and down and releasing the scan is a fully automated process.
Scanning books without exposing them to any pressure or simply contact-free is also possible. The V-shaped glass can be removed within less than one minute.
The ROBO SCAN V2 also allows you to scan manually. If there is a problematic book that the robotic arm can ‘t handle, the robotic function can be disabled, and the pages can be turned manually.
In fact, the ROBO SCAN V2 offers even more! It is also possible to change the book cradle from V-shape to flat to scan magazines, photographs, maps, or any other single sheet originals.
The ROBO SCAN V2 can be operated via touch panel or optionally with Batch Scan Wizard which is a fast and easy to use software solution for professional management of large scanning volumes and jobs. The software increases data throughput and reduces operational tasks. Batch Scan Wizard is ideal for processing large volume scanning jobs but is just as useful for smaller volumes in which more advanced operations like page splitting or extracting specific areas on a document are required.
The SMA ROBO SCAN model 0 plus is completely unique. It combines the capabilities of a manual A0+ book scanner and the convenience of an A1+ robotic book scanner in one.
Since the robotic function can be disabled the ROBO SCAN 0+ is extremely versatile.
It can scan A0+ maps and books manually and books up to A1+ robotically!
There is no product like this in the world!
The Robotic Book Scanner ROBO SCAN is also available in an A1+ or A2+ configuration

What is V3D Scanning?
V3D stands for VISUAL 3D. It is a newly designed scanning technology that produces results that look like 3D. The process is based on different lighting scenarios where the same area is being captured with several different lighting angles on the fly. The software then combines the separate images into one image. As a result, V3D images offer perfect reproductions of almost any structured surface. In addition, it increases the depth of the field significantly. This approach is unique and raises the outstanding image quality of SMA scanners to another level. The V3D function can be disabled and regular 2D scanning can be performed.

BSW – BATCH SCAN WIZARD
Simplify High Volume Scanning
Batch Scan Wizard is a fast and easy to use software solution from Image Access for professional management of large scanning volumes and jobs. The software increases data throughput and reduces operational tasks substantially. Batch Scan Wizard is ideal for processing large volume scanning jobs but is just as useful for smaller volumes in which more advanced operations like page splitting or extracting specific areas on a document is required.
The operator creates a job and configures a template for the job. Then, all images scanned are collected in the job until the job is closed by the operator. In addition to the standard scan parameters like brightness, contrast, color mode or file format Batch Scan Wizard lets operators predefine specific areas of a document to extract, scan and save as separate images. Nothing is lost, because you can reopen a stored scan job and change it with the features cut, delete, insert, and replace for any selected image in the job. You can also change the filename or directory location of the job.
Batch Scan Wizard supports all Scan2Net® scanners and their functions. Using Batch Scan Wizard’s rescan function, a previously scanned image is held in memory. Color mode, file format, rotation, mirror and camera settings can be modified without having to rescan. The new settings will affect the image immediately, without having to physically rescan the document. When you have optimized your scan parameters, you can save the new images or replace an image in your batch.
The new, freely configurable workflow tracking in Batch Scan Wizard supports you with information about your files in each scanning job. This record includes date and time for each image scanned, the scanning parameters used, the PC used and the location of your images.
Batch Scan wizard scan job indexing will help with the compilation of individual variables and/or combinations of variables for the automatic creation of file and directory names and their directory structures.
Batch Scan Wizard Functions:
Create custom templates for specific scanning parameters, file naming conventions and directory locations
Automatic generation of file and directory names and directory structures using individual or combinations of variables
Freely configurable file, directory, and scan template names (via manual input, barcode or using variables)
Configurable keyboard shortcuts to optimize processing speed
Supports all Scan2Net® functions as well as page splitting, page region extractions, zoom, rotate, invert and mirror
Interface allows operators to select a variable number of image windows
Individual image scaling horizontally, vertically or adapted to the window size
Cut, delete, replace and insert a selected image into a previously generated job
Multiprocessor and hyperthreading support
Indexing scan jobs
Keyboard shortcuts, file menu and mouse context menus

New features and updates summary:
The Crowley – Wicks and Wilson Limited – MEKEL WWL C400 Series offers the following updates and new features compared to the previous C250 Series
Fully compatible with Windows 10, supporting 64-bit versions of Microsoft’s latest operating systems has been provided.
Simplified install and set-up with digitally signed Windows drivers.
The C Series of 35 mm Aperture Card Scanner consists of:

An SMA Versascan Scanner in action
The VERSASCAN 4870 double A0 flatbed scanner comes with V3D – a new scanning technology which allows users to scan many different types of originals. It offers the capability of digitizing structured surfaces such as wood, rubber, plastic, fabrics, carpet and many more types of material. Finally, light reflecting items such as coins, seals and metal prints can be captured at the highest quality. The V3D technology presents new opportunities as it can be applied to materials outside the normal archive and library world. V3D stands for VISUAL 3D. It is a newly designed scanning technology that produces results that look like 3D. The process is based on different lighting scenarios where the same area is being captured with several different lighting angles on the fly. The software then combines the separate images into one image. As a result V3D images offer perfect reproductions of nearly any structured surface. In addition it increases the depth of field significantly. This approach is unique and raises the outstanding image quality of SMA scanners to another level. The V3D function can be disabled and regular 2D scanning can be performed.
Operating the VERSASCAN 4870 2A0 flatbed scanner is as easy as operating a photo copier. Open the lid, place the document, close the lid and hit the scan button – that’s it! Alternatively the scanner can conveniently be operated via foot switch.
SMA is the only company in the world that offers a full line of large format flatbed scanners varying from A1+ to double A0+ as well as a line of manual and robotic book scanners. All flatbed scanners are suitable for scanning large and fragile originals that do not require a book cradle or cannot be handled by a feeder. Due to its newly designed roll-away mount it is easy to move the scanners around – regardless of their size. Simply unlock the flatbed scanner, fold it up and off you go. Alternatively a motorized height adjustment is available in order to accommodate different working positions.

The City Archive of Wiesbaden (Hessen)Germany is now the proud owner of a SMA model SCANMASTER 1 DIN A1 Book Scanner.
The City Archive of Wiesbaden (Hessen)Germany is happy to be able to digitise their collection of books, certificates and seals in outstanding quality.
The visual 3D feature (V3D) of the SMA model SCANMASTER 1 DIN A1 Book Scanner allows in particular, structured surfaces such a seals to appear exceptionally realistic.
SMA Electronic Document GmbH of Germany Polish partner Skanowanie. pl explains in the above Video the visual 3 D – V3D functionality of the SMA Book & Large Format Scanners, which makes images of structured surfaces seem absolutely realistic.
How does the NEWV3D which stands for VISUAL 3D = 3D LIKE Scanning Feature work?
Technically it works like this:
There are TWO-2 lamps in the SMA Scanner Range Scan Heads – with a top lamp and a bottom lamp. In a normal 2D scanning process both lamps are ON. With the NEWV3D which stands for VISUAL 3D = 3D LIKE Scanning Feature every line of pixels takes three shots:
Top light only,
Bottom light only and
Both lights on.
The firmware then merges all THREE-3 images. That’s why the NEWV3D which stands for VISUAL 3D = 3D LIKE Scanning Feature looks 3D-LIKE.
The NEWV3D which stands for VISUAL 3D = 3D LIKE Scanning Feature provides the operator with a major advantage when it comes to structured surfaces or things like metal, seals or anything that is shiny or reflective. Sometimes there are golden or silver like prints located in books requiring scanning.
When scanned with an overhead scanner the image created looks very unusual & of poor quality.
The viewer can’t even see in the scan what the original was like as the metal effect disappears and is turned into grey or dark yellow or beige.

Specially designed for Fine-Art, Professional Cartography and the main cultural heritage digital reproduction applications.
The DRS 2020 DCS with its up to 200 x 120 cm (78.74 x 47.24 in) scanning format is the largest model in the METIS DRS-DCS for Cultural Heritage family. It has been specially designed for the most demanding cultural heritage applications such as Fine-Art, professional cartography and the main digital reproduction applications on this market.
The DRS 2020 DCS introduces important features such as:
a digital camera with 16K imaging sensor. The digital camera is vertically motorized in order to allow achieving an optical resolution of 1200 PPI (up to 2400 x 1200 PPI).
the innovative DC Synchrolight lighting system. The DC Synchrolight (Dynamically Controlled Synchronized Light) is a patent protected METIS technology.
METIS DC Synchrolight gives the ability to control and change dynamically, instantly and automatically the angle and intensity of the light emitted by the light sources in the scanning area, making it possible to optimize the result of the digitization, depending on the type and nature of the originals.
Thanks to the unique METIS SuperScan mode and “MDC” file format, all the naturallight schematics are recorded and available within a single file. Moreover, thanks also to Light Inspector software different visual appearances can be obtained at any time without the need for rescanning the original or making physical adjustment to the lighting. Therefore, our technology allows identifying in real time the best natural light schematic between thousands of possible ones and providing results unreachable by any other system on the market.
The ability of evaluating light changes in real time allows to very quickly achieve an optimal reproduction even on very difficult originals, dramatically speeding up and simplifying the scanning workflow.
In addiction, thanks to the METIS Photometric Stereo 3D technique, from the MDC SuperScan file it’s also possible, in a matter of seconds, to calculate and extrapolate 3D data directly from the acquired 2D color data.
More in detail, below are some of the DRS 2020 DCS unique features:
it includes a wide collection of METIS software (Scan Director, Light Inspector, Color Profiler and others) specially aimed to various Cultural Heritage applications. All METIS software tools are very user-friendly and perfectly integrated one with the other, generating a very smooth workflow and perfect results no matter the task.
It integrates all cutting-edge METIS technologies including the ability to SuperScan; this is a sophisticated but completely automated acquisition mode uniquely available in METIS scanners that allows:
changing the visual appearance after scanning without the need to scan again. This greatly helps the operator, for example, to find the best visual appearance or to find/study details of the scanned original previously invisible to naked eye;
generating a dense and accurate 3D Depth Map through the “METIS Photometric Stereo 3D” technique. Since 2013 METIS has pioneered and refined this technique and enriched its software with 3D tools for optimizing the data for different kind of use (engraving, visual evaluation, paintings reproductions, etc.);
generating a special Glossiness Map that can be used for printing/engraving/visualization purposes as, for example, to extrapolate a mapping of golds or other metallic details on illuminated codes for reproduction purposes.
The scanner is very easy to operate and highly automated. For example, light schematics can be changed without the need for manually compensating exposure, contrast or greybalance and temperature is monitored continuously in order to provide consistent and repeatable results over time. The scanner itself is the expert and takes care of the technical details!
Unsharp masking, despeckle, paper color correction, light reflection tool, crop and multi-crop, automatic file naming, are some of the important features that our software easily handles for the cultural heritage needs.
The DRS 2020 DCS, like all other DRS-DCS systems, has a high scanning speed and operativity with perfect color accuracy and zenithal vision, can handle very large files, has a very large depth of field (user selectable) and is designed to last over time.
The geometrical accuracy is the highest possible allowing for use in the most demanding professional drawing and cartography applications.
It is easy to learn. Our software is simple to use and has a user-friendly interface which allows even a novice user to master professional scanning techniques.
Last but not least, all Metis software is constantly enhanced thanks to our fantastic R&D department!

SMA Electronic Document GmbH of Germany Releases their NEW Contactless Scanner EPIC 4870
Probing New Horizons!
SMA proudly presents the Contactless Scanner EPIC 4870. It is the latest design in the market to digitize originals face up without the intervention of a glass plate so contactless scanning is possible. Moreover the Contactless Scanner EPIC 4870 comes with V3D technology, a new scanning technology which allows users to scan many different types of originals. It offers the capability of digitizing structured surfaces such as wood, rubber, plastic, fabrics, carpet, marble, glass and many more types of material.
The process is based on different lighting scenarios where the same area is being captured with several different lighting intensities on the fly. The software then combines the separate images into one image. As a result V3D images offer perfect reproductions of nearly any structured surface. In addition it increases the depth of field significantly. This approch is unique and raises the outstanding image quality of SMA scanners to another level. SMA is the only company in the world that offers a full line of large format flatbed scanners varying from A1+ to double A0+ as well as a line of manual and robotic book scanners. With the addition of a contactless scanner SMA widens their product range further. All flatbed scanners are suitable for scanning large and fragile originals that do not require a book cradle or cannot be handled by a feeder. The book scanners are designed to handle large and thick bound originals utilizing a pressure sensor controlling the book cradle. The new SMA EPIC 4870 was created to digitize structured surfaces contact free. All SMA scanners offer the highest possible optical resolution in the market – in particular in large sizes such as A0 and above.
Operating the Contactless Scanner EPIC 4870 is easy and straight forward. The object table can be removed and rolled around freely. This comes in handy in particular when the original to be scanned is large and/or heavy. Simply roll the table to the object, placed it on the table, roll the table back to the scanner and plug it in. Now you can hit the scan button and the rest of the process is fully automatic. The optical scanning unit moves downwards until the optimal position is reached. A laser grid system constantly monitors the surface of the original and stops the camers once it has reached its scanning position. All SMA scanners are equipped with a special LED light illuminator that does not produce any ultraviolet or infrared radiation. Harmless and uniform illumination is guaranteed. The illuminator of all SMA scanners is located inside the scan head and is simply moved across the original. As a result all SMA scanners can be operated independent from ambient light and do not irritate the operator‘s eyes.
SMA scanners were designed for applications where speed is an issue. The utilized scanning and interface technology guarantees the highest possible productivity. Further, the capability of scanning bidirectionally cuts the mechanical impact in half and increases the productivity further. It doesn’t get any faster than that!
Our line of scanners is equipped with an unique scan engine Made in Germany. It provides high quality images based on state of the art technology. Bitonal, grey scale or color images can be produced with a resolution of up to 1200 ppi. All our scanners achieve a very high geometrical accuracy.

Bigger. Better. Faster.
The book being scanned dates back to 1819
The thickness of this book exceeds 15 cm.
Moving scales are essential when scanning such sizes. Here we see the work of a specialist at an accelerated rate, but at normal speed, the time to scan or rather prepare the scanned sites is between seconds and even 3 minutes.
A quick scanner and professional employee is the key to success when scanning.
Is your Organisation still climbing the Document Mount Everest?
Maybe its time to Digitise
The SMA model SCAN MASTER model 3650A0 Plus Book & Large Format Document Scanner is the flagship model of the SMA Electronic Document GmbH family of Book & Large Format Document Scanners.
The SMASCAN MASTER 0 plus model 3650 is an alternative to the well-known SMASCAN MASTER 0 plus model 4838.
With a scan orientation like the SCAN MASTER 2 and SCAN MASTER 1 scanning from back to front and vice versa the SCAN MASTER 0 plus model 3650 achieves a similar productivity to the SCAN MASTER 0 plus model 4838.
Moreover the new SCAN MASTER 0 plus model 3650 is able to be upgraded to Robotic Scanning.
With a Scanning range of 14 x 1270 mm = 36 x 50 inches the SCAN MASTER 0 plus model 3650 scan is shorter & narrower than its successful sister SMA model VERSASCAN 4838.
This Double A0 scanner opens news doors as it can scan oversize originals in one go without the need of stitching serval scans together as with equipment with smaller scanner formats.
Further the SCAN MASTER 0 plus model 3650 offers outstanding productivity.
A high resolution scan of 600 X 1,200 PPI True Optical & 1,200 X 1,200 PPI Interpolated over the entire scanning range can be performed in about 24 seconds only @ 600 ppi in colour!
Of course the SMA model SCAN MASTER 0 plus model 4838 is equipped with our new V3D technology.
